Roses are sold by length, in centimeters – there isn’t a floral industry-wide standard for the length of the ‘medium stem’ or ‘long stem’ roses. But below is an approximate guide.
infographic on long stemmed roses

Sweetheart, Petite or Miniature Roses (30-40cm)
From 11.75″ to 15.75″ in length, with buds approx. 1/2′ in diameter and 1″ high.

Short Stem or Tea Roses (40cm)
15.75″ in length, with buds approx. 1″ in diameter and 1.5 to 2″ high.

Medium Stem Roses (50cm)
19.75″ in length, with buds approx. 1″ in diameter and 1.5 to 2″ high.

Long Stem Roses (60cm)
23.5″ in length, with buds approx. 1.5″ in diameter and 2 to 2.5″ high.

Premium Long Stem Roses (70-80cm)
27.5″ and up in length, with buds approx. 2″ in diameter and 2.5 to 3″ high.

Did you know that roses naturally blossom on a stem about 6″ long?

To create longer stems, the side branches of the original stem are pruned away resulting in a very long stem. Many of the rose buds on the stem are removed, leaving just one bud. By removing the branches and buds more nutrients go into the one rose rather than many. This cultivation results in a longer stem and a larger bud, which results in a larger bloom. The roses have to be the pick of the crop, those that do not “make the cut” cannot be sold as Long Stem Roses.
Cost of long-stem roses
Long stem roses are more expensive than other roses due to the high cost of cultivating them. At Valentine’s Day the price for roses increases further, due to supply and demand – there is demand for a huge volume of long stem red roses for just one day.

Long stem roses are the quintessential rose to send to your wife or girlfriend.

Most rose bushes will initially produce several buds per stem, and you’ll have to gently remove any additional buds in order to help your 1 long-stem rose grow larger.
