6 Tips to Help Combat the Winter Blues

For many, the holiday season is the most wonderful thing about winter. Gathering with family and friends, hanging decorations and exchanging gifts were a few of the many things to look forward to in December. Sometimes, the days following Christmas and the start of the new year can be a little less thrilling and more daunting. With less excitement to look forward to and harsher weather to anticipate, the winter blues can come out of nowhere and stick around until the first day of spring. There are, however, plenty of simple ways to try and ease the impact of seasonal depression. Here are six tips to help combat the winter blues this season:

  1. Start a New Exercise Routine

Whether you haven’t been to the gym in a year or you already work out regularly, now’s a great time to switch things up and start a new exercise program. Getting too comfortable can make it difficult to grow and learn, and it may make it feel like you’re falling into a rut. Work with a personal trainer or try an activity you’ve been interested in pursuing for years.

  1. Take Up an Indoor Hobby

When the winter wonderland kicks into high gear, you may find yourself twiddling your thumbs and pacing the house for something to do. Take advantage of your time inside to take up a hobby that doesn’t require a setting beyond your living space. Calligraphy, photography, writing and cooking are a few of the new pastimes you can take up during the winter.
